Did you know it’s possible to build meaningful friendships through the power of story?
“Beautiful day,” I heard the voice say as I helped my toddler trudge her way up the hill from the lake.
I lifted my head ever so slightly to see an older gentleman, probably in his 70’s, sitting alone on the picnic bench, just a stone’s throw away.
On any other day, I most likely would have responded with a friendly smile, maybe a nod, and then continued on my way.
But this was not any other day..
Just an hour earlier, during my morning prayer time, I heard the Lord’s still, small voice whisper a word of instruction to my heart.
I picked up my pen and paper, writing frantically- afraid I would quickly forget the words that I so clearly heard Him speak.
“Pay attention to the people along your path. They are there for a reason. They are important.”
Upon completion of my prayer, I noticed I had a newfound sense of awareness and anticipation.
Who might I meet today?
And how might they be important?
My imagination ran wild with possibility.
Leaning In
“It’s stunning,” I replied, locking eyes with the gentleman seated before me.
Instead of going about my merry way, as usual, I decided to lean into the encounter, and I sat down on the park bench next to him.
Our conversation effortlessly skirted well past the initial pleasantries.
We talked as old friends, while my toddler played happily at my feet.
He shared about his children and grandchildren, about the house he grew up in not far from where we sat, and about his childhood memories of fishing at the very lake whose scenery we were enjoying.
There’s something beautiful that transpires when we lend our ears to the stories of strangers.
And I began to think that this is what this encounter was all about— presence, listening, and a willingness to partake in something sacred.
Meaningful friendships are forged this way.
I felt warm, content, satisfied. Soul happy.
There’s something beautiful that transpires when we lend our ears to the story of strangers. #Connection #Friendship Share on X
An Unexpected Visit
Looking up from the table where we sat, just a short distance away, I met eyes with a woman quickly approaching our table.
She wore a loud, bright pink shirt that read, “Jesus Saves” in bold white letters across the front.
My curiosity piqued almost immediately.
She made her way towards us with determination and intention. And It didn’t take long to realize that she knew my gentle new friend.
Plopping herself on the bench next to me, she introduced herself as the daughter of the older gentleman, and joined in on our conversation, as though she had been there all along.
My heart skipped a beat.
This encounter was becoming more and more fascinating!
The Lord’s tender instruction continued to ring repeatedly in my ears.
“Pay attention. Pay attention.”
After a few minutes, our conversation hit a lull. But not the awkward type. It was curious to me how comfortable I felt with these individual’s who only moments before were complete strangers.
Breaking the silence, the woman asked me if by chance I had come across any “love” rocks along the trail that circles the lake.
Indeed I had!
Living only a short distance away, my family hiked this leisurely trail often, and we’ve come across several of these painted rocks, that were so carefully distributed throughout the Path.
In fact, it had become a kind of treasure hunt for my kids, who looked forward with excitement to discovering more of these treasures with each new visit!
The woman smiled, held out her hand, and gifted me with a rock that she had recently painted. It read “hope lives.”
What happened next was unexpected.
She proceeded to tell me the story behind these love rocks.
One family’s heartbreaking story of love, loss, and hope.
A story of an unthinkable tragedy that rocked her local hometown.
A story that touched the hearts of an entire community who watched in awe, as forgiveness, grace and mercy were doled out in bold measures.
You can read their story here.
It became apparent to me, that this seemingly “chance” encounter was no chance at all. It was a divine encounter with the One who directs our steps.
An Invitation to Sacred
“Pay attention.” “Pay attention.” His voice rang heavy in my ears.
Philosopher, Simone Weil once wrote “attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.”
When we give ourselves fully, completely, without distraction, we offer the most generous gift we can give to another.
Stories engage the heart, and help to connect us on a deeper level.
They bring people together, and build meaningful friendships where once there was none.
As we lean in, we are moved from a place of mere interaction, to authentic connection.
How might our lives change if we fully gave ourselves to the listening and sharing of one another’s stories?
When someone offers up their story, they are in essence, extending an invitation to partake of something sacred.
They are offering up a piece of themselves— a risk of grandiose measure— and asking that we take care to not stomp it into the ground.
It requires courage to be this vulnerable and transparent. But transparency is the doorway to intimacy, and intimacy eventually leads to deeper, more meaningful friendships.

Listening too, requires risk.
The art of truly listening to one another doesn’t just engage our ears..
It engages our heart. And the heart is a fragile thing.
This type of listening seeks to not just respond— but to understand.
Listening to actually *hear* the heartbeat behind the skin.
It is not for the faint of heart. It requires bravery.
Some stories are hard to hear.
Some might require a little soul-searching on our part.
Some might prick at a place deep within, that had long since become numb.
Some stories may even awaken the soul.
Holiness in the Present
I listened intently as the woman shared her story; my eyes welling up with tears.
She had no idea how this story would impact me.
She had no idea that I too was a mother who has journeyed through the valley of the shadow of death— that I have my own story of love, loss and hope.
She had no idea.. but God sure did!
Between the sun beating heavy on my face, and my toddler’s incessant whining, I was reminded that it was approaching nap time.
I thanked the woman for sharing her story with me, and she thanked me for listening.
Isn’t this how authentic connections are forged? Meaningful friendships are built through the sharing of our stories?
By creating a safe place for the heart to land, we extend an invitation for deeper connection to take root and grow.
We invite others into our stories— our experiences, thoughts, struggles, and emotions.
And they invite us into theirs.
A holy exchange.
Authentic connections are forged through the sharing of our stories. #Connection #YourStoryMatters Share on X
Shauna Niequist says it like this, “To those of us who believe that all of life is sacred, every crumb of bread and sip of wine is a Eucharist— a remembrance— a call to awareness of holiness right where we are.”
I couldn’t agree more.
Might I extend the invitation to you also, to begin cultivating true connection by giving the most generous gift of all— your attention.
Who knows how the person along your path might just become an integral part of your own story! Who knows what meaningful friendships you might discover along the way!

I love listening to others share their stories but struggle with sharing my own. You presented this in such a beautiful way and have given me a few things to think and pray about. Thank you!

This is such a sweet reminder to pay attention to others. I must admit it’s difficult for me to make connections with people I don’t know. Just thinking about approaching and sitting down next to a stranger with no other reason to be there makes me shiver. “What would I say?’ is about the only thing I hear ringing through my mind in those kinds of situations.
I really appreciate this reminder that maybe, just maybe, it’s not about me. 😉 Maybe someone else needs that connection and all I need to do is listen. Great post. I needed to read this today; I’m glad I found it (via the Tell His Story linkup).
Oh, and the Love Rocks story…tears to the eyes. What a testimony.

What a beautiful story! Thanks for sharing. It can be so difficult to be this kind of intentional in our fast paced world. But you’re right, it’s always worth it. We are the light of the world, and how can we shine if we’re too busy focusing on our own stuff? Thanks for this challenge! I need to hear it again and again.

What a beautiful story! I love how God uses story – in his Word and in our own lives – to build relationship and teach us things that are more true than facts.

Great post! Attention is a great gift for it not only values the other person but validates their story which often has been forged in the fire of affliction.
Thank you!

Love rocks. My neighbor just had her four granddaughters paint rocks for when they stayed at her house last week. They left them at the park. They were gone the next day. My grandkids are coming for one month soon. I think I should have them do this. Wonderful post. Thank you.

Wow – this was so powerful for me this morning. Not simply the message but the timing. Goes exactly with my devotion time this morning (not that long ago) and how God spoke to my heart and challenged me. I love how God used that encounter – and that you shared it with us. Now it has impacted more than just you:) (this is why I spend time reading..and re-reading posts!) 🙂

What a beautiful post. You have no idea how much it talked deep down to my soul. I am in the process of clearing my plate a bit to make room for authentic connection. I needed to be reminded to slow down that people on my path are there for a reason. What a blessing your post was to me today. Sharing for sure.

I love holy exchanges and your encounter with the older gentleman and daughter is such a sweet testimony to the importance of our stories. I love these words: “It requires courage to be this vulnerable and transparent. But transparency is the doorway to intimacy, and intimacy eventually leads to deeper, more meaningful connection.”
I am learning to become more vulnerable and in the process I am finding it leads to me becoming more secure in my identity.
