5 Simple Ways to Make Family Bible Study a Success

Looking for ways to incorporate a family bible study time?

Y’all, my family is on spring break this week! Woot!

The kids are home, my husband is home, and mama is doing the happy dance!

Whether your kids are home schooled or public schooled, one thing is sure- we parents work just as hard as our kids do throughout the school year. Can I get an amen?

And so with gusto, the kids and I left the school parking lot on Friday afternoon, singing our own rendition of Alice Cooper’s original hit song, “School’s Out for Summer!” (Only we inserted the word, Springbreak, in place of Summer.)

But our celebration came to a sudden halt when my son asked this serious, albeit, innocent question:

“Mom, now that we’re on break, can we get back to reading the Bible together as a family again?”

Talk about a kill-joy!

I instantly felt a twinge of guilt- and dare I say– actually let out a begrudging sigh…

Raising Kids Who Are Kind

Last week my kids’ school hosted a family movie night, showing the movie, Wonder.

If you’re not yet familiar with this movie, I cannot recommend it enough.

Wonder is a movie that follows the life of a fifth grade boy, born with a craniofacial difference, who attends a public school for the first time. It is an inspiring movie with a heart-warming message about acceptance, kindness and friendship.

Between the most recent school shooting in Florida, and the new release of the movie Wonder, it has sparked several healthy discussions with my kids about the importance of kindness.

I think it’s safe to say that our world could use a little more kindness. Don’t you?

How to Be the Light in a Dark World

Be the light.

This is the phrase I often use to inspire my kids each morning, before I send them off to school.

“Go. Be the light.“

It’s a simple concept really, and yet all-encompassing.

Be the light…

to the lonely, to the ignorant, to the oft forgotten.

Be the light….

to the lost, to the angry, to the broken.

Be the light…

to the hungry, to the proud, to the hopeless.

Be the light that shines in the darkness.

Be the light that illuminates the way.

Be the light in the midst of chaos.

Be the light!

My 8 yr old remembered these words one day, while on her way to school.

As she hopped up onto the bus, she noticed the unfamiliar face of a girl, roughly her age, sitting alone. Her head was bent towards the floor; eyes fixated on the laces of her shoes. She appeared to be nervous and alone.

My daughter thought of the words I had spoken to her just minutes before, “be the light.”

She imagined what the new girl must feel like, not knowing anyone, or having anyone to talk to. So she worked up enough courage to take a seat next to her. When the girl looked up from her lap, my daughter simply smiled and said, “I like your shoes.”

The girl immediately smiled back, and the rest of the way to school the two talked, and laughed, and enjoyed getting to know one another.

One single act of kindness resulted in a year-long friendship.

A simple smile can go a long way!

10 Back to School Prayers

This week marked the first week of school for many families.

Some children approach this time of year with enthusiasm; excited to reunite with old friends, meet their new teachers, and resume some form of consistency.

Others approach the school year reluctantly; digging in their heels, refusing to accept that the long, flexible days of summer have come to an end.

Whether your child belongs to the first category, or the second, one thing is certain- both our kids and teachers alike, need our support if they are going to make it through the school year successfully.

What’s the best way we can offer our support?

Prayer.

I am a firm believer in the power of prayer to transform our lives. Not so much the prayer itself, but The One to whom we pray.

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

On the first day of school, the hubs and I give our kids a proper send-off, by laying our hands on them, and praying a blessing over them for their upcoming school year.

We pray, not only for them, but for the teachers they will have, the classmates they will encounter, and the coaches they will be assigned. We pray for the cooks that will serve them, the principal that will oversee them, and everyone in between.

Anyone, really, who has any involvement in helping to ensure that the school year runs effectively.

If you’ve not before implemented the practice of prayer as a way to send your kids off to school, it is never too late to start!
