I confess that I often cycle through seasons of selflessness and selfishness.
SelfLESSness doesn’t come naturally to me. While selfishness certainly seems to.
One has a tendency to come with ease and little forethought.
The other? Well, it requires intention on my part, and a conscious effort to die to self.
This life. It isn’t about what I can get.. It’s about what I can give.
Often times, I think I make this more complicated than it needs to be. I think of giving on the grander scale of things. What can I do that will make the greatest impact?
But God doesn’t ask us to give only in big ways.
And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.
Matthew 10:42
The beautiful mystery in the above passage is that the reward often comes in the giving itself. WE are blessed, when we become the blessing.
Prayer for Today
Lord, may we always be reminded that even Jesus didn’t come to be served, but to be of service to others.
Help us to step outside of our box- the one that keeps us isolated and “protected.” Sheltered and selfish.
As we seek You in prayer today, I ask that you make us more aware of our surroundings, and alert to those whom you are inviting us to come alongside and pour into. Neglecting not the small things.
Give us a heart that desires to serve those you put in front of us. Whether it be a neighbor, coworker, family member, stranger, or friend.
Knowing that whatever we do for the least of these, we do for You. (Matthew 25:40)
