When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if you had only been here, my brother would not have died.” (John 11:32)
Do you ever doubt God’s love for you? Especially in times of suffering?
The above verse contains the words spoken by Mary after the untimely loss of her brother, Lazarus, thousands of years ago. And let’s be honest, we ask the same type of questions when walking through our own seasons of suffering, don’t we?
If you had been here, Lord..
If I was important to you..
If you loved me..
Mary, heartbroken and grieving, was disheartened by the lack of urgency and care on Jesus’ part. She had sent word to Jesus about Lazarus’ illness, with plenty enough time for Him to arrive and heal her brother before it was too late. Having spent precious time at His feet, Mary knew Jesus well enough to know that He loved them, and He alone had the power to keep her brother from dying.
So why did He tarry? Did He in fact love them? Mary felt abandoned and confused by Jesus’ actions, (or lack thereof, as the case may be), and she began to doubt His love and goodness.

Where Were You God?
For years, I wrestled with similar sentiments.
If God had been here, I would not have been struck with a fatal disease that stole my childhood, and kept me locked inside.
If God had been here, my innocence would not have been taken from me at the hands of another.
If God had been here, I would not have miscarried our son?
If God had been here, I would not have been forced to suffer from years and years of chronic illness.
Lord, if you had been here, my daughter would not have died..
My guess is that you have been haunted by such questions at some point in your life, as well. When, like Mary, we know that God could have prevented our circumstances from happening, but didn’t, it’s easy to feel confused and disheartened too. Unmet expectations, no matter how innocent, are breeding ground for disappointment. And disappointment often leads to doubt.
In light of God’s seeming absence, I could only conclude one thing; God did not love me.
The Danger of Doubt
Notice Mary’s question began with one little word.. If.
“Lord, if you had been here..”
My own feelings of doubt began there too. The word, if, is synonymous with uncertainty and hesitancy. It tricks us into believing something that is false. And it is often conditional. If God loves me, then He would save me. Those if/then statements set us up for disappointment with God when things don’t go the way we hope. Satan knows this well. Just where do we suppose doubt stems from?
“He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)
The Bible makes it clear that satan is a liar. He will twist the truth ever so slightly, doing whatever he can to fill our mind with doubt. Be on guard, because he doesn’t always do this blatantly. He very often uses subtly.
Notice in my questioning, I didn’t start by adamantly declaring God does not love me. Rather, I began subtly contemplating, if God loves me. It was more of a question than an outright statement. In the end, the two essentially mean the same thing, but the insertion of the word if makes it less obvious, and therefore more deceptive.
My questioning started slowly, but snowballed over time, and with each new struggle. I simply could not wrap my head around a Father who could save, but chose not to. Don’t the scriptures say that our heavenly Father gives good gifts to those who ask Him? (Matthew 7:11) How then did suffering fit into His good plan?

This is dangerous ground to tread. Author Lysa Terkeurst says in her book, Unglued, “Feelings are indicators, not dictators. They can indicate where your heart is in the moment, but that doesn’t mean they have the right to dictate your behavior and boss you around.”
Have you ever been bossed around by your feelings? I can think of several characters in the Bible whose circumstantial feelings caused them to wrestle with God’s goodness too- Eve, Sarah, Moses, Gideon, David, Job, John the Baptist- just to name a few. If we’re not grounded in the Word of God, we will be easily swayed by how we feel, in any given moment.
Due to my circumstances, I did not feel very loved by God, therefore I questioned whether or not, I truly was. But my years of questioning finally came to a head when God revealed His love for me in a most unexpected way.
The One Whom Jesus Loves
I’ll be honest, I used to get easily annoyed when reading the gospel of John. Every chance he got, the disciple John would refer to himself as “the one whom Jesus loved.” (John 13:23) Every. Single. Time. And I would think to myself, either this guy is so terribly insecure that he has to constantly remind himself that he is loved. Or he is so extremely arrogant, that he feels everyone ought to know how very loved he is. Either way, I found his repetition to be obnoxious.
That is until one day, the Lord, upon hearing my secret complaints about John, silenced my accusations.
“Rachel, you don’t get it.” The Lord said to me. “John frequently refers to himself as the one whom Jesus loves, because he is so awed by the revelation that Jesus- the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lord’s, the Messiah sent to save the world from their sins- loves HIM.”
Suddenly it all made sense! John’s declaration of God’s love came from a deep sense of awe and gratitude. He was not overconfident or insecure in himself. On the contrary, John was confident and secure in God’s love.
John spent time- a lot of time– with Jesus. And over the course of that time, the revelation of God’s love moved from John’s head to his heart, and drastically transformed him from the inside out.
John possessed the kind of security and confidence that I had been missing, and desperately longed for.
The Proof of His Love
Our senses can easily become dulled in the aftermath of hardships, and the presence of suffering. But if the revelation of God’s love begins with awe, then I can think of nothing more effective in helping to restore our wonder than by reminding ourselves through scripture, of just how much the Lord loves us. So much so, that he sent His one and only son to die for us. (1 John 4:9-10)
One of my favorite scripture verses is found in Zephaniah 3:17:
“The Lord your God is with you. He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you. He will quiet you with his love, and rejoice over you in singing.”
He will rejoice over you with singing.. What an incredible thought! The Lord delights in us. When I have an accurate view of God’s amazing love for me, I can process my suffering through a lens of hope. And hope turns my thoughts from being inward focused, to being upward focused. This change in perspective makes all the difference, in the presence of suffering.

He loves us intimately, affectionately, tenderly.
His love is not dependent on us. There is nothing that we can say, or do that will ever remove His banner of love from us. Nothing can ever separate us. Nothing. Not even our questioning of His goodness and love.
God IS love. Period. He knows no other way.
A Lullaby of Love
May we all get a glimpse of the kind of love that John experienced for himself. If you’ve ever doubted God’s love for you, I encourage you to get quiet before the Lord, and envision Him singing over you. He longs to quiet you with His love.
Turn up your worship music, (a playlist provided below), and let the words sink deep. Allow them to move from your head to your heart.
Spend time at His feet. Bask in His love. Soak Him in.
Be comforted. Be held. Be loved.
Prayer:
Father, I admit that sometimes I struggle with feeling like you don’t love me. Life can be difficult, and circumstances so hard. When I’m tempted to believe anything other than what your Word says, redirect me back to you. Draw me with your steadfast love, and your lovingkindness. And help me to believe what your Word says, despite how I feel. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What a beautiful reminder! There was a time in college when someone from my dorm died tragically, and I asked the question of, “But if You are in control of everything, why this?” God was so gracious in reminding me that yes, He’s in control, but there are some things we won’t understand until we see Him face-to-face.
